Simplicity is about developing freedom from our attachments, especially material. Simplicity is an inward reality that results in a particular outward life-style. The Biblical injunction is consistent: avoid the accumulation of wealth and look after the less fortunate. The Bible even goes so far as to declare that wealth itself belongs to God. The Jubilee Year was to have been that moment when imbalances in accumulated wealth would be redressed. This discipline challenges our vested interests in an affluent life-style. The central point of this discipline has to do with priorities, and the priority is clear: seek first to bring about God’s Kingdom. God’s Kingdom is about life abundant, and life abundant is about relationships, beauty, and the pursuit of something greater than oneself. A few simple suggestions to move towards simplicity : buy things for their usefulness rather than their status; reject anything that is producing an addiction in you; develop a habit of giving things away; refuse to be propagandized by the custodians of modern gadgetry; learn to enjoy things without owning them; develop a deeper appreciation for creation; look with a healthy skepticism at all “buy now, pay later” schemes; reject anything that breeds the oppression of others; shun anything that distracts you from your primary role in life of helping to realize God’s Dream for humanity.
